Succes: Our First Turkey

Our apartment complex gave out turkeys around Thanksgiving time. We got one, promptly stuck it in the freezer and didn't give it a second thought. I pulled it out on Saturday to start thawing it (mostly in the fridge, partially in water on Sunday). We bought a throw-away roasting pan. I had done some quick searching on "cooking a turkey" and, well, that didn't help much. "Season however you'd like." Would I really be trying to figure out how to cook a turkey if I knew how to season it?

Called my dad. "Let's say you have a turkey..." He laughed.

I ended up covering it with soy sauce (we've had this thick soy sauce since we were married - it's too thick to use in any other way other than marinade). We stuck it in the oven and it was supposed to be done in 3 hours. At 4 1/2 hours, the thermometer still hadn't popped.

Called my mom. "Let's say your turkey thermometer doesn't pop..." She laughed.

I ended up cutting between the leg and breast to check the color of the juice and the meat. We had to leave the apartment at this point, so we turned the oven off. Upon our return, the thermometer had popped. Yay!

We made some mashed potatoes (sans gravy), heated up some green beans, and voila! a meal was born.

Even Jaeden agrees the turkey was good.

Jared & Suki

Compliments of Melody's blog. <3 to Melody!

What are your middle names? (Jared) Alan and (Suki) Lee

How long have you been together? Almost 3 years.

How long did you know each other before you started dating? About 6 weeks before our first date.

Who asked who out? Suki asked Jared.

How old are each of you? Jared is 25. I am 21 (for another 3 days).

Whose siblings do/did you see the most? His. Well, 2 of his since the rest are in Arizona.

Do you have any children together? We have 2 feline fur babies.

What about pets? Like I said above, 2 of 'em. Kara and Jaeden.

Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple? Currently, I would say the times when Suki is riding the hormonal roller coaster ride and Jared doesn't get it.

Did you go to the same school? BYU-Idaho, baby!

Are you from the same home town? Nope. He's from Oregon, I'm from Ohio.

Who is the smartest? Jared -- when he remembers. That's if you mean science, math, history, and the like. I have my own share of knowledge like names and faces and music.

Who is the most sensitive? Me.

Where do you eat out most as a couple? Um... we don't really have a "most". Some of our favorites are Zab's (the best Thai food place ever) and Subway.

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple? Ohio.

Who has the craziest exes? He doesn't have any exes... and I do. So... *points to self*

Who has the worst temper? Probably me. When I'm hormonally-normal, it takes a lot to upset me or make me mad. When I'm hormonally-challenged, it doesn't take much.

Who does the cooking? Both of us. Typically I do more of the cooking while Jared does more "cooking" (aka put a pizza in the oven).

Who is more social? Me. Jared's only social when he knows somebody well.

Who is the neat freak? Me.

Who is the most stubborn? Probably me. Especially when it comes to things that HAVE to be a certain way for me.

Who hogs the bed? Me... usually I don't know it.

Who wakes up earlier? Jaeden... on week days, it's both of us, although I get out of bed first. On weekends, it's Jared.

Where was your first date? To a dance on campus.

Who has the bigger family? Immediate family is a tie--we both have 7 siblings. Taking into account nieces and nephews, Jared does.

Do you get flowers often? No.

How do you spend the holidays? Usually with family. Mostly Jared's Oregon family since Ohio holiday travel tends to be pricy.

Who is more jealous? Probably me.

How long did it take to get serious? 10 minutes? Hehehe... just kidding. Kind of.

Who eats more? Jared by far.

Who does/did the laundry? Me.

Who is better with the computer? Jared but that's only because he's a computer engineer programmer whatever.

Who drives when you are together? We both drive. Not at the same time. It depends on who drops who off at work. They drive. Whoever drove less during the week usually is the one to drive on the weekends because the other person is tired of driving.

I love work. I really do.

...1 1/2 weeks ago...
Me: I found this email in Stacey's inbox. Let me panic now as I do these two reports even though I have no idea what I'm doing and where to get the information done.
Rod: Don't do those reports. We're not a project. Aaron says we should be doing some other report. I have a meeting with Pam next week about this.
Me: Okay. Let me know the outcome.

...Today...
Cherie: Send your reports to Lauren.
Me: *give explanation of why I haven't done them*
Lauren: Okay!
Lauren a few minutes later: Uh, nevermind? Even though you're not a project, you still have stuff going to the SDC. I'm sending out an email and will BCC you on it. And keep you in the loop.
Me: *face plant*

.............................

The most recent examples of managers not knowing what they're doing, of communication going haywire, and me being annoyed because it most likely means I'll be crunching pretty hard core to get this out since it was due last Friday and I could have done it 1 1/2 weeks ago and instead, I was told not to. Yes. I love work.

.............................

...Today (Wednesday)...
Me: Okay.... this isn't us... this isn't us... this isn't us...
Rod: Just do this.
Me: Okay...
Pam: I don't know about this. Let's try this.
Me: I'm gonna ask questions.
Lauren: No one will know if something's missing. But hey, you don't have to fill out THAT report. Fill out THIS one instead!
Me: *faceplant*

The Dark Knight

I have a hard time with most action movies. Blood, guts, gore... they disturb me. They leave me feeling gross. It doesn't even help to look away at parts because I know it's still happening.

When The Dark Knight was released, I wanted to see it. Jared was surprised because of the above paragraph. But I loved Batman Begins and was looking forward to this sequel. We saw it in the theater and I really enjoyed it. It was a very well done movie. The acting was good, the script was good. I think I preferred the the first Rachel to the second.

Tonight, we watched it again. Actually, it's still on. And I'm not watching it anymore. For some reason, I started getting really disturbed. It wasn't the killing, actually. It was the Joker. He really got to me. I think it was because of continually discovering issues at work that are in various stages of disarray. Then I watch the Joker and he's all about living without rules, doing things because he can. How is a (somewhat) obsessive compulsive person supposed to handle that when they actually think about complete lack of organization of any kind? No rhyme or reason to the madness.

I still like the movie. I would like to watch it again some day. Maybe at 10 in the morning on a sunny day. Then afterwards, I can go for a walk, go swimming, watch You've Got Mail or another such happy movie.

Batman: the man who makes the right choice when nobody else can. (In Alfred's words.) He either dies a hero or lives long enough to see himself become the villain.

4's

This will be easier than most of the ones I see. It's much easier to pick four things than just one. I don't do absolute favorites so well. I'll have to post my 25 things from Facebook here.

******

Four places that I go to over and over: Work, Home, Church, ... Jared's work would be next in line, I think.

Four people who email me regularly: Expense Tracker, Jim (well, as often as I email him, he always emails me back), Colleen, my mom.

Four favorite smells: citrus scents, the air after it's rained or the grass has been mowed, guys (the ones that don't smell bad), any nice meal that I haven't cooked (and thus already used to the scent and so it doesn't smell to me).

Four places I would rather be right now: At home relaxing, at home sleeping, in Ohio seeing my family, some place warm like Hawaii.

Four TV shows I watch: Heroes, Dancing With the Stars (although I'm not very consistent), the Pretender (on DVD), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Four people I tag: Tonnie (because she tagged me), Jared (as my husband), Valerie (who has a blog, but doesn't know I have one), and Kara (my cat who likes sitting on the laptop's keyboard).

It's SIX questions. Take the time to think of the answers.

Gung Hey Fat Choy!

"Last Updated 22 Oct 2008"

Since then we've canceled our gym membership, gotten rid of bed bugs, adopted two kittens, celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and Chinese New Year, implemented our project at work, got new cell phones, and.... that's about it.

Oh wait, I have a new niece: Genevieve Noelle Robinson. ValeReed's second child. Jamie is due with her second this month.

Today I cooked Chinese food. Last Monday was Chinese New Years, but with work, I don't exactly have the time to cook Chinese. So that was today. We kept it simple: won tons and chow mein. We ended up doing bao but that was only because we ended up with the time. We invited the missionaries over as they didn't have a dinner appointment and I didn't them to not have a meal. Besides, you don't cook Chinese in small quantities.

I used a new won ton recipe. It actually called for them to be baked. Jared protested, so we did half and half. I baked, he fried. They both tasted good, but Jared still votes for fried. I made, of course, Tomato Beef Chow Mein. I really liked the noodles we got this year.

And the bao..... I don't have the hang of it yet. My yeast went wonky and that was my first problem, I think. The second is that I think the water condensing on the lid of the steamer causes problems too. I read that cheesecloth tied to the lid should help. I'll have to remember that for next year. Jared protested the bao because we didn't have Chinese pork. Oh well! We decided the bao tasted like pretzels. I still liked them, but they weren't light and fluffy like they should have been.

We decided we'll do dishes tomorrow. :-) Even though we did dishes while we were cooking (well, I did most of the cooking... Jared took a nap after helping a couple in the ward move some furniture), we still ended up with lots...
